Every summer we make a trip back to the East Coast to visit family. This year, we also had the chance to celebrate my goddaughter’s graduation and enjoy an extended family reunion with C’s family in Maine. Despite a few hiccups (most notably, N breaking her toe and being on crutches for the week), we had a wonderful time connecting with family and reconnecting with some of my childhood haunts.
First Stop: A Graduation Party in CT
Our first stop was Connecticut. We enjoyed time relaxing in the pool; hanging out at Sonny’s Place, where fierce basketball games were played and enormous banana splits were consumed; and celebrating my goddaughter’s graduation. Unfortunately, N also broke her toe and was on crutches or in a boot for the rest of the week (and 6+ weeks after).

Second Stop: The Beach in Rhode Island
During our time in CT, we decided to spend a day at the beach in Rhode Island. It’s not too often that our prairie-based family spends time at the shore, so we wanted to make the most of it. We spent the day relaxing on the sand and playing in the waves by the old Andrea Hotel in Westerly, RI. N even managed to get in some beach time on her crutches. As a child, I spent many summer vacations there, so it was a treat to go back and introduce my family to this special place.

Third Stop: Coastal Maine
After our time in CT and RI, we started the drive to mid-coast Maine, where we connected with C’s extended family at Sebasco Harbor Resort. We enjoyed spending time with relatives that we do not get the chance to see very often and relished in the beauty of the Maine coast.
